Osteoporosis: After Your Fracture

Osteoporosis: After Your Fracture (00:01:46)
Video Transcript

Our bones are constantly breaking down and rebuilding themselves.

But when you have osteoporosis, the bones break down faster than they can regrow.

They get thin and weak, which means they can break easily, like yours did.

Without treatment, osteoporosis may get worse.

And because you've already had a broken bone, your chances of it happening again are higher.

So this is a good time to stop and think about what you can do to lower your chances of having a more serious break ...

one that could cause you to lose some of your independence.

And the best thing you can do is take the medicine your doctor has prescribed.

Osteoporosis medicines actually slow the breakdown of your bones, so they can grow strong again.

Like most medicines, they can have side effects, like an upset stomach or headache.

But many people don't feel them, or they're able to deal with them.

Don't let any side effects stop you from taking this very important medicine.

If they really bother you, ask your doctor if you can change to another medicine.

If you have trouble remembering to take your medicine, try using a pill organizer.

You could also write reminders on your calendar, or use an alert on your phone, computer, or watch.

Or talk to your doctor about other ways to solve this problem.

Yes, it can take a little work to slow osteoporosis down and start rebuilding strong bones.

But for some people ... it can mean the difference between living on your own or needing assistance.

So make a promise to yourself right now that you'll find a way to take your osteoporosis medicine.

You'll feel better knowing you're taking a big step to keep yourself as healthy and independent as possible.
